The Kimberley Process in plain English
The certification scheme every rough diamond must pass through to cross a border legally.
01Why it exists
In the 1990s, rough diamonds financed civil wars in several countries. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, launched in 2003, was created to keep these 'conflict diamonds' out of legitimate trade.
02How it works
Member countries may only trade rough diamonds with other members. Every shipment travels in a sealed container with a government-issued Kimberley Process certificate stating its origin, weight and value.
Importing countries check the seal and certificate before releasing the parcel.
03What it doesn't cover
The scheme covers rough diamonds and conflicts involving rebel groups. Buyers increasingly expect wider due diligence on labour and human rights as well, which is why we ask for more than the certificate alone.
